There should be more color in the plants that remain, but even in 200 years, it wouldn't be a complete overgrown forest-if anything, we'd just be starting to see the emergence of young forests. The disaster caused when the bombs hit would have made Chernobyl look like a very minor oops. It's bombs and nuclear reactors and municipal plutonium wells and TVs and cars and robots and thousands upon thousands of barrels of improperly stored waste and and and and and. So take a quick Flickr tour around the Exclusion Zone, and then realize that in Fallout, it's not just a bomb, and not just a nuclear reactor. Here's something on the subject:Ĭhernobyl, Hiroshima/Nagasaki, and the Fukushima Daiichi meltdown are really the only information we have on what would happen in the case of widespread nuclear disaster, but Chernobyl is probably the closest to what happened in the Fallout universe (Hiroshima and Nagasaki were hit with bombs that today we'd consider "weak" by comparison to what we have now Fukushima Daiichi was in "shit shit shit we know what happens when this happens STOP IT NOW" mode even before the reactor went critical, and a lot of damage was prevented as a result).
